Primary 1-6

Primary English Course

Learning a language is not easy, but certainly not impossible. At the heart of a language is the deliberate act of communication. The pristine form and purpose of English to communicate effectively is espoused in the design of lessons with the aid of videos and newspaper articles. Students will develop their confidence as they participate in classroom discussions where they could test their ‘English’ in a safe and encouraging environment.

The emphasis on grammar, vocabulary and comprehension will be a guiding principle in our lesson packages, serving the overarching aim of effective communication. Effective communication constitutes a degree of skill in the comprehension of the interlocutor’s intention and ideas that is underpinned by an understanding of grammar rules and vocabulary or the meaning of the conversation. We aim to instill an insatiable interest in the language in our students that they would love to express their ideas via the English language in both the spoken and written modalities. Therefore, practice in the classroom written exercises will not be the mindless and monotonous regurgitation of grammar rules but an appreciation of how grammar is useful and fun to use, and the fun pedagogy of learning vocabulary (which also includes metaphors of speech and idioms) through games and engaging exercises.

Primary Mathematics Course

The study of Mathematics is not simply solving examination problem sums. Through Mathematics, a child develops logical reasoning and application of problem solving skills that extends well beyond the classroom.  We cannot overemphasize the importance of these skills in the ever-changing landscapes of the 21st century.

At a fundamental level, students are taught to appreciate the lawful relationships by understanding the origins of the metric systems and mathematical concepts (e.g., meters, area, volume, speed, etc.) and the ease and accuracy with which they can explain and test these relationships using mathematical language, beginning from Primary 1.

Therefore, here in Tutelage, we emphasize the design of our lesson packages. Specific instructional objectives are to be spelled out and met in each lesson, which not only include the mathematical skills, but also the appreciation of the origins and utility of the concepts and methodology. Overarching our instructional approach, we believe in bringing out the fun in mathematics so that students will begin actively seeking out mathematical approaches to solve real-life problems for the fun of it. That also, is how we believe creativity and thinking-out-of –the-box can be nurtured.

Primary Science

We feel a sense of regret when we witness how students are cramping for Science examinations by memorizing and regurgitating volumes and volumes of text without a fundamental grasp of the scientific concepts. More often than not, these students continue to do badly in their Science examinations despite the time and effort they spent doing and memorizing their assessment books. Regrettably, they often develop a sense of anxiety and dislike for the Sciences.

We believe that the heart of Science is inquiry. Throughout the ages, scientists seek to explain the natural laws found in the earth we live in. The law of gravity was not discovered by Newton indoors. Archimedes’ principle was even discovered in the bathtub! Intuitively, we know that these great laws and theorems were the result of the scientists’ incessant inquiry and curiosity. They never stopped asking the why’s, what’s and the how’s. The questions did not originate from the examination papers but the world itself.

Questioning thus begins in the Tutelage classroom but takes students’ minds to the world beyond. Why does it rain? What is my shirt made of? How were the birds classified as birds and not mammals? At Tutelage, we bring the world to the classroom with our projector and teaching aids. Students are exposed to videos of the world outside the classroom and even Singapore. Science is fun because we teach them what is interesting about the world, and why it is interesting to learn about them.
